# Make your first request

> Check your token's organization and retrieve a page of skills.

You need a Parkes OAuth access token or personal token for the organization you want to access. The skills request also requires the `skills:read` scope and permission to read skills. See [authentication](https://developers.parkes.ai/AUTHENTICATION.md) for credential options.

## 1. Set your token

Set `PARKES_TOKEN` in your shell using your secret manager or a secure prompt. Keep the token out of source control and command-line arguments.

The examples below read the token from that environment variable.

## 2. Check your identity

```bash theme={null}
curl --fail-with-body https://api.parkes.ai/rest/v1/me \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $PARKES_TOKEN"
```

Check the returned identity and organization before proceeding. If you need a different organization, authorize a separate credential for it.

## 3. List skills

```bash theme={null}
curl --fail-with-body 'https://api.parkes.ai/rest/v1/skills?limit=10' \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $PARKES_TOKEN"
```

The response contains a `data` array and `page.next_cursor`. An empty array is valid when there are no visible skills. If the cursor is not null, pass it with your next request to [continue the traversal](https://developers.parkes.ai/PAGINATION.md).

## Next steps

Find an operation in **API reference**, then check its required scopes and request schema. Before making changes, read [writes and concurrency](https://developers.parkes.ai/WRITES.md): POST requests require an idempotency key, and conditional updates require the current resource version.
